|Any parent will tell you that his or her children tend to follow their example as opposed to following what they say. Children do hear their parents, but they tend to model their behaviors after what they see their parents actually doing.
This means that if you care about helping your family establish strong, lifelong habits such as employing proper oral health care routines, it is important that you do this yourself. Here are a few tips to help you get started.
Stress the Importance of the Basics
Of course, taking care of your teeth involves regular visits to our office for a professional cleaning. But proper oral healthcare starts at home, with your daily regimen.
Be sure that your children see you brushing your teeth at least twice each day. What's more, when you brush, show them the proper technique. Moving the brush in a gentle circular motion while angling it towards the gumline will help clean the teeth much better than a simple sawing back and forth motion.
In addition, be sure that your children know the importance of flossing at least once every 24 hours—and make sure they observe you doing this. Proper flossing habits are probably the single most neglected part of the oral health home care routine.
Educating Your Family
In addition to setting an example, take the time to explain to your children why you are doing certain things. If children understand why it is so important to floss, for example, they are much more likely to start doing it for themselves.
Consider setting a time for you and your children to engage in your oral health care routines together. If your kids have the chance to brush and floss when you do, it will help reinforce the idea that it needs to be done regularly (and in the proper way). This will help protect the oral health of you and your family for years to come.
